Steve Pickering - WINNER!
Retail Markets Manager, Warrington Borough Council
Steve joined Warrington borough council as an office clerk in the Estates office at 27. Three years later he went back to college to train as an estate management surveyor. Several years later Steve stepped in temporarily as market manager whilst the post was vacant and has stayed for the last 10 years! Steve says of his role: "I really do enjoy my work at the market; I can honestly say no two days are the same. Over 130 independent businesses and 600 people work there so I do feel a great responsibility to the stall holders, my staff and of course the customers too." "In the last few years, trading has become increasingly difficult and it has been important to develop and initiate new ideas outside of my usual remit to move forward, which has meant drawing on previous creative skills and lateral thinking."
