Reducing the Carbon Footprint
Dumfries and Galloway Council
Until recently, Dumfries and Galloway was languishing close to the bottom of league tables for diverting waste from landfill. Today it is rated as the most improved council in Scotland for waste diversion. The key has been the introduction of a PFI contract for a new 'Eco Deco' plant which processes all waste and recovers useable materials and fuel. By linking this up with a new gasification plant and harnessing gases from decommissioned landfill sites, the council has hugely reduced its carbon footprint by creating energy for thousands of homes.
