FAQ's for Councils - Local Government Challenge

20/07/2009

Frequently Asked Questions - Councils:

1.    We would like to enter but don't think we can put together a whole team.

This is a competition for individuals, with one final winner. Individual officers from across England and Wales will be invited to apply to be contestants (with permission from their employing authority). The final ten contestants will be selected from all the applications received.

The Local Government Challenge will divide the final ten contestants into two teams of five. The make up of teams may vary for different challenges but each contestant will have the opportunity to be team leader.

2.    As a small authority we would like to submit a proposal to host a challenge but are concerned about our capacity to deliver.

Whilst we are looking for exciting proposals, the challenge itself need not be over complex, provided that it is practical and provides an opportunity for the candidates to demonstrate their skills.

As the candidates will be divided into two teams of five, we would also welcome joint bids from more than one council. For example one team might work with one council whilst the second team undertakes the same challenge in a neighbouring authority.

3.    There is a prize for the winning contestant.  What is in it for the host council?

Hosting a challenge is an excellent opportunity for councils to showcase their own authority and at the same time promote innovation and talent in local government. The LGA Group will work with host councils to promote the local challenges in the national, regional and local media, as well as on our dedicated websites.

We are also keen that challenges address real local priorities so that both your council and its local community receive a lasting benefit from the work the candidates undertake on the day.

4.    We are keen to host a challenge but funding is tight. How much would it cost?

The local government challenge will pay all reasonable transport and subsistence costs for candidates to ensure that they arrive at the right place at the right time. This includes the cost of overnight accommodation if challenges begin early in the morning or end late at night. We also pay all judges expenses, including those of your locally nominated judge. All you need to pay for is the cost of briefing materials and of attendance by your own staff and members.

Depending on the type of challenge we may be able to contribute towards the cost of any materials required - but please talk to us about this first.

5.    How do we apply?

Challenge Applications are now closed.
